shigra-modelo-01
Handmade Shigra — Model 01

The shigra is a centuries-old accessory of Ecuador's indigenous peoples and nationalities. Its production is concentrated in the highlands, in the provinces of Cotopaxi, Tungurahua, and Chimborazo, where the weaving technique and the dyeing process of cabuya (agave) fibers have earned worldwide recognition. The raw material comes from the mature leaves of the cabuya plant, split into long strands and soaked for 15 days to remove pulp residue. Once selected, the strands are dyed with plant-based pigments and hand-woven onto an oval base that expands upward in zigzag colors, shapes, and figures. Making one can take anywhere from 15 days to 6 months, depending on the complexity of the design. Originally a personal bag for carrying the "cucayo" (a packed snack) and gathering fruit, the shigra today walks the fashion runways of New York, Paris, and Milan.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0754/8813/3456/files/shigra-modelo-01_5986ac23-ae94-4186-ab0a-26c36a95b9bd.png?v=1787804768
